Have you ever wondered how far you and your dogs would make it travelling the Iditarod Trail? Now you have the chance to find out, with Running West’s ‘Iditarod in a Year’ 2025!
The Iditarod is the world’s most famous sled dog race, renowned for brave teams racing across the Alaskan wilderness. Mushers stop at checkpoints along the route to rest and care for their dogs, before reaching their final destination in Nome. Typically, this takes mushers 10 days…so 365 should be plenty!
In Australia, with nothing like the Iditarod to compete in, Running West is excited to bring you ‘Iditarod in a Year’. For a $50 entry fee, you will receive your very own map of the trail and for each checkpoint you theoretically reach, you will be provided with a sticker to add onto your map. The aim is to see how many checkpoints or stickers you can collect and make it as far as you can between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025. After converting miles to kilometres, we have worked out that to make it to Nome you will need to average roughly 4.5km per day. Sledding (bike, scooter or rig), as well as canicross walks and runs, in both training and race situations (so long as the distances are recorded – we recommend Strava) are acceptable means of completing the challenge. Once you have signed up, you will receive your map and sticker sheet. Each time you reach a checkpoint, post your evidence in our group page and we will keep a record of the race standings to keep mushers updated throughout the year. Download the logbook to make it easy for you to track your progress!
There will be a trophy plaque awarded to each participant who makes it to Nome by the end of the year.
Support a small, south west WA sledding club and develop your own fitness as well as your dogs in 2025.
